چکیده

Oncopeltus fasciatus, Chemical Defence, Cardenolide Sequestration, Carrier-Mediated Uptake, Cardenolide Carrier Oncopeltus fasciatus (Hemiptera) is morphologically and physiologically adapted to seques ter cardiac glycosides for its chemical defence against predators. As a prerequisite for carde nolide utilization this bug has to take up and store the dietary cardenolides. Using isolated midguts it could be shown experimentally that the resorption of [3H]digoxin is time-, and temperaturedependent. The hydrogen ion concentration for uptake is optimal between pH 5.5 and 7 and an activation energy of 45 to 49 kJ/mol can be derived from an Arrhenius plot. Uptake can be inhibited competitively by the polar cardiac glycoside convallatoxin. Sulfhydryl group reagents (N-ethylmaleimide), membrane destabilizing compounds and respira tory chain inhibitors reduce digoxin resorption, as do inhibitors of sugar transport (e.g., phloridzin). The experimental data thus provide evidence for a cardenolide carrier in midgut cells of O. fasciatus.

Kruppel is a gap gene in the intermediate germband insect Oncopeltus fasciatus and is required for development of both blastoderm and germband-derived segments.

Segmentation in long germband insects such as Drosophila occurs essentially simultaneously across the entire body. A cascade of segmentation genes patterns the embryo along its anterior-posterior axis via subdivision of the blastoderm. This is in contrast to short and intermediate germband modes of segmentation where the anterior segments are formed during the blastoderm stage and the remaining...

04-P012 Germ line specification in the milkweed bug, Oncopeltus fasciatus (Hemiptera)

The body axes of many animals are initially patterned by the asymmetric distribution of maternal mRNAs and proteins in the oocyte. In Drosophila, these maternal factors are synthesized by the 15 nurse cells that connect to each oocyte within the ovary. However, insect ovaries fall into three anatomical categories, of which Drosophila represents only one. The telotrophic meroistic ovaries of the...

Development and determination of hairs and bristles in the milkweed bug, Oncopeltus fasciatus (Lygaeidae, Hemiptera).

The term' organule' is proposed as an English equivalent for the German word' Kleinorgan'. The different organules on the third sternite of Oncopeltus are described: larvae possess innervated bristles and special sensilla termed 'chemosensilla', whereas the adult develops, in addition, a dense population of non-innervated hairs. The hairs, bristles and 'chemosensilla' each develop from mother c...

Impulse patterns in the flight motor neurones of Bombus californicus and Oncopeltus fasciatus.

The ability of central nervous systems to generate complex patterns of motor output without patterned input has now been clearly established. Some of the most thorough analyses of such centrally generated patterns have been made on the flight-control mechanisms of locusts (see Wilson, 1967, for a review) and calliphorid flies (Wyman, 1966, 1969; Mulloney, 1969). Each of these studies included a...

Absence of ribosomal DNA amplification in the meroistic (telotrophic) ovary of the large milkweed bug Oncopeltus fasciatus (Dallas) (Hemiptera: Lygaeidae)

In the typical meroistic insect ovary, the oocyte nucleus synthesizes little if any RNA. Nurse cells or trophocytes actively synthesize ribosomes which are transported to and accumulated by the oocyte. In the telotrophic ovary a morphological separation exists, the nurse cells being localized at the apical end of each ovariole and communicating with the ooocytes via nutritive cords. In order...
